What a gift - Glass Blowing with the WHOLE Family!

A special thanks to Rick Eggert for an absolutely incredible experience. This past holiday weekend the entire Materio clan took glass blowing lessons. Ranging in age from 18-60 we all had a blast. The class is geared towards teaching you the process and ensuring you end up with a beautiful finished product. We made bowls, paper weights...and some interesting abstract pieces! McMow Art Glass is our featured merchant in the Limelight. McMow Art Glass offers the best in stained glass windows and beveled art glass as well as beautiful designs in carved, etched and faceted glass. Located in Palm Beach County, Florida since 1976 McMow Art Glass maintains an excellent working relationship with top builders, architects and designers and regularly ships their work throughout the US, Europe, South America and the Caribbean.With our experienced staff of master glass craftsmen and designers, McMow Art Glass is able create a clearly outstanding work of art for any residence, commercial building or place of worship. In addition to our residential and commercial art glass work, McMow is also the leading retailer and school in South Florida. Teaching a wide-range of art glass techniques from stained glass to fusing, McMow places emphasis on bringing the glass arts to the surrounding community.

McMow is co-owned by husband and wife team Shanon and Phil Materio, each of whom are accomplished community leaders. Owner Shanon Materio has sat on both the Lake Worth CRA and the WPB Art is Public Places Committee. Shanon also led the education committee and program on the Art Glass Association of America's Board of Directors. Phil led the Dixie Hwy Corridor improvement committee on the South end Neighborhood Association Board and now sits on the Tropical Ridge Neighborhood Association Board. In addition to his numerous community volunteer hours, Phil is an accomplished glass fusing artist who teaches his mater series at McMow each year.

McMow also works to preserve historical glass works across the Country. The McMow artisans have restored and repaired several South Florida historical landmarks including Saint Anne's Catholic Church, Vizcaya, Flagler's personal railroad car, Seagull Cottage in Palm Beach and Holy Trinity Church.

McMow was awarded the Greater Lake Worth Chamber of Commerce's inaugural “Dream Big – Business of the Year Award” on Friday, November 12, 2011 and the Business of the Month award in October 1998.

Beginner's Lead Came Class
Saturday, September 10th - 9:00-3:00

In the Beginner's Lead Came class, students will learn how to assemble a stained glass window, using the tried and true Lead Came method. Using Lead Came, as opposed to the copper foil method, has been prevalent in Europe for centuries to construct world famous pieces like those found in Canterbury Cathedral. Now, come and celebrate that very art at McMow by learning the basics of how it was done.

The class will cost $130, and includes glass, the pattern, lead came, solder, flux, cement, and wood molding for set up. The class will require a soldering iron and stand, lead dykes, glazing hammer, 2 small hand brushes, lathekin, lead nails, wire brush, Pro Lead Knife, and a small household hammer. If you are missing any of the required material, McMow will be selling them at 15% off if you are taking the class (with the exception of the small household hammer).

Beginning Glass Beadmaking

Saturdays starting in September - November from 10am to 3pm
(with a 30 minute lunch break)

Taught by Special Guest Artist Courtney Tavares

You can learn the exciting craft of creating glass beads and pendants. Beads such as these are in high demand due, in part, to their lovely visual appeal. This type of beadmaking is also incredibly unique. Each and every bead has it's own little flare, that can never be reproduced. Students will walk away with their own beads, infused with the individual artistic flare of the person that created it!

The class will cost $275 and includes ALL materials, each person will leave class with beads they made. You must be paid in full to reserve your slot.

Fusing I
Saturday, August 27th from 9am to 3pm

In this class you will learn how to create you own fused glass creation. The art of fusing glass is a highly personal function. Fusing of all levels can be applied to the same piece in an effort to create something that speaks to you. This class will instruct its students in the process that takes place in creating these one-of-a-kind sculptures. It will cover everything from basic kiln operation, elementary fusing terms, and forming your glass. You will also be working with frit and stringers to add flare to your pieces. This is a "Make it and Take it" class and students will be making 3 to 4 fused glass tiles.

All materials are included in the $130, and it happens to be one of McMow's most popular classes. Make sure to call ahead and reserve your spot as quickly as possible.

Direct Method Mosaic Class Starts This Staurday March 19th

This 2-part class is the perfect way to have fun with mosaics! In this fabulous hands on class, wou will learn the basics in mosaic application that you canuse in many other future projects.

McMow will supply a choice of designs OR you can free-form your own design and take home the entire completed project - A beautiful and functional mosaic vase, handmade by YOU!

Come and have some fun with us - Saturday March 19th from 9am-3pm (part 1) and Saturday, March 26th from 9am - 12 pm (part 2).

The cost of the class is $95 and includes all materials -glass, glue, glass vase and grout. Students are welcome to bring their own vase or piece to mosaic. Students should bring their own glass cutters or nippers, and wear closed toe shoes.

As part of our recent Fusing February festivities, McMow hosted an Experimental Fusing Lab. This seminar-style course gave both novice and advanced fusing enthusiasts a more detailed look at some of the most unique hot glass techniques.

McMow Fusing Masters Phil Materio and Debra Hawthorne taught the group of more than 15 participants how to pull glass stringers by hand and how to do a hand gather from a molten glass glory hole.

In appreciation for the excellent protection and safety accorded the residents of Lake Worth by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and the Palm Beach County Fire Rescue , McMow Art Glass offers our Deputies, Firemen and Paramedics the opportunity to participate in the Glass Arts. Public Safety personnel, along with their spouse or other family member can sign up for a special beginners class at 1/3 off the regular cost. As our way of saying Thank You to Lake Worth's finest and bravest, the regular $55 fee has been reduced to $35.

"Our hope is that Firefighters and Policemen will find the relaxation they so deserve in crafting their first piece of stained glass art and that it will become a favorite and pleasant pastime for them in their off duty hours.", said Shanon Materio, owner and Creative Director of McMow.

McMow has trained firefighters in West Palm Beach in the past and even helped set up a work area at their fire station to occupy the time between rescue calls.

Learn the Art of Stained Glass!

In this class you will learn the basic techniques required to create a stained glass panel. Learn how to cut and shape glass, how to foil and solder, and how to assemble your project for a beautiful completed stained glass panel, handmade by you!

Cost of $55 (plus tax) includes 5 continuous weeks of instruction and your choice of beginner’s stained glass pattern.Class meets once a week for five weeks - 3 hour session each class.

Additional costs for materials and supplies: We offer a student kit complete with all necessary tools and supplies (except stained glass). Student Kits are discounted by 15%.All students receive a 10% discount on other materials and supplies for the duration of class.

The Art Glass Society will meet on Saturday, August 28th at 9:00 am at McMow Art Glass to work on a collaborative project we will be donating to Quantum House in West Palm Beach.

We will be making mosiac stepping stones for their new garden, and we would like to get 5 or 6 stones made on that Saturday morning. Never worked in mosiac? No worries!! Jim and Pat are going to lend their expertise to everyone who is willing to learn! So, if you are available to join us that day, it should be great fun - and all for a wonderful cause!

We will have just about all of the supplies we need EXCEPT for scrap glass. Please bring your own scrap glass to donate to this project. McMow is generously giving us the space to work, molds for the stones, and the tools we need to work. All we need to do is show up with glass!

To receive more news and information from the Art Glass Society in your email, as well as notices of upcoming meetings, special events and demonstrations, please contact artglasssociety@gmail.com

The basic concept for the formation of the Art Glass Society of Southeast Florida is to provide an outlet for glass artists of ALL mediums to come together to network, share ideas, and to expand their knowledge of glass art. The monthly meetings will give us an opportunity to discuss interesting topics related to the glass arts, see live demonstrations, get educational tips, and network with each other. As we grow, we can look forward to guest speakers, workshops, and other special events.

Glass Society News To Date...

February 2nd-Introductory Meeting. We discussed a mission statement, and the basic concept for the group. People from many different areas of art glass world were represented. Several artists had pieces of their work on hand - lovely to see!

March 2nd-Second Meeting. Phil Materio, owner of McMow, held an "Overview of Glass Cutting" live demonstration. He also gave a demo of the table foiler. It's wonderful to have such a large, great space for demos. Jim McClean volunteered to be the Treasurer, and is an experienced treasurer. Thanks, Jim!

April 6th-Third Meeting. We watched an incredible video on the glass artist Paul Stankard - The Private World of Paul J. Stankard, Nature in Glass. It was just amazing to see his work in action! They are all botanical works, and even have hidden 'root people' entwined underneath. Fabulous! We were even able to see one of his paperweights in person, as he gave one as a gift to Phil and Shannon for some work they did for him (wow, nice gift)! Check out the links section if you are interested in seeing Paul Stankard's work. Again, members showed their interesting and eclectic assortment of beautiful glass work.

May 6th-Fourth Meeting. Phil spoke to the group about Blenko glass (see links). This is an unusual glass that has been made for many years by the Blenko family. We watched a video about the very different way that this glass is made, and saw a few samples that Phil had from his 'secret stash'. Annual dues were discussed and decided upon. They will be $30, payable at the next meeting, June 4th. As we are in the process of setting up our non-profit status and have no checking account at this time, please pay your membership dues with cash. You will be issued a receipt (and a membership card) with your payment!

McMow Supports Neighborhood Identification Program

This beautiful stained glass window was created and donated to the Tropical Ridge Neighborhood Association by McMow Art Glass. The window, measuring 32 1/4" wide by 18 1/4" high features cut stained glass in shades of pink, green and lavender with clear glass bevels. The piece is lead camed and comes ready for hanging. The retail value of the window is $530.

The winning raffle ticket will be drawn at the November 1st Tropical Ridge Neighborhood meeting. Tickets are $5 each and all proceeds will go to support the Tropical Ridge Neighborhood Association Banner Program. Raffle tickets are available at:

Versace Mansion: A Look Inside The Villa By Barton G

From 1993 until Mr. Versace's death in 1997, the Dreamweavers at McMow Art Glass served as the exclusive suppliers for all the art glass on the property. Every stained glass, carved glass and flashed glass window was created and/or restored by McMow and each was embellished with gold leaf by the McMow team of Dreamweavers. How well do you understand the Versace style? Did you truly understand how he paired cheetah prints with paisley patterns and made it work? Sure, you understood that he was an icon and the envy of celebrities everywhere, but were you daring enough to wear Versace? And if you dared, did you do it right? Gianni Versace had a sense of style that set his creations apart from the rest and while you might be able to pick a Versace out in the crowd, it's likely you needed a fashion stylist to show you how to properly wear the genius wardrobe.

There's good news: you don't have to wear Versace to stay in what was once his multi-million dollar Miami mansion but I assure you, once you walk through the guarded doors of this palace you'll 'get' Versace. And you'll never be the same.

Gianni Versace's Miami mansion is the second-most photographed home in the U.S. Try as Michelle Obama might, the White House has nothing on Versace's style.

On July 15, 1997, the fashion world came to a screeching halt when Versace was shot dead outside his Miami home, but his legend lives on inside the white-washed walls on Ocean Drive. The Italian fashion mogul called 1116 Ocean Drive home for more than five years and hosted everyone from Elton John to Madonna at his lavish digs. While his legacy lives on among the accessories, fragrances, makeup and clothes, the home that Versace built remained closed to the majority of the public until now. When Barton G. Weiss took over the posh digs he turned the Versace-owned home into a hotel for those who defined the very meaning of glamour.

You don't need to own anything Versace to be able to recognize his look. The complex mix of fabrics and patterns were synonymous with Versace style. No one else could pair animal prints with bright pink cashmere and turquoise blue porcelain with gold-flecked and multi-jeweled crystal. You know a Versace when you spot it, and the same holds true for his 19,000-square-foot South Beach home - within seconds of walking through the iron gates, you know you're standing inside the brainchild of one of fashion's greatest minds.

I walked into the mansion at precisely 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning. The butler opened the steel gates and ushered me into the courtyard where the fountain in the middle streamed gold water (via gold thread in its spouts). I stood in awe as the realization of my whereabouts came into focus. The Versace handbag tucked safely in its dust bag in my closet suddenly had a whole new meaning.

The butler took my half-gulped latte and placed it perfectly in the center of a silver tray while she pointed the way toward the outdoor pool area. A quick left at the water fountain and we were standing face-to-gold in front of the Thousand Mosaic pool. Lined in 24k gold and serving as a focal point along the perfectly manicured lawn, the pool was nothing short of mesmerizing. I couldn't imagine swimming in it, and yet at the same time I wondered what it was like to float along the gold that trimmed the perimeter of the pool. The lounge chairs were all cushioned with Versace prints and while Ocean Drive was only steps away, you felt like you were in another world.

Guests can dine al fresco by the pool during the day and in the evening, the cuisine turns five-star in the 30-seat dining room. From the tiled walls to the Versace-original flatware and plates, you can almost see the visionary sitting in the corner enjoying a meal on the one-of-a-kind dishes and sipping wine from the jeweled cups that grace each table. Dinner menus are designed daily and the carefully cultivated wine list offers more than 100 labels selected from the world's finest vintners. After dinner drinks can be served in the Dining Room or outside in the courtyard under the stars.

I made my way up the first flight of stairs (my coffee approximately three steps behind me the entire way) and walked into the first suite - the Signature Suite, said to be where Versace's brother, Santo, stayed when he visited. The living room is true Versace - a plethora of colors, textures, patterns and technology merged to produce a stunning entrance. Zebra print sofas sit next to cheetah print lounge chairs, both accented with bright throw pillows in red, pink and orange.

The bedroom is what dreams are made of. Barton G. kept the same fabrics, color schemes and ambiance that was left over from the Versace days. A double-king bed serves as the focal point of the bedroom, flanked by original Versace drapes and linens. The custom created comforter is red silk with embroidered cheetahs, but the way it was cut explains the very definition of "design." Linens are cut on dimensions - a twin, full, queen, king - and are sized appropriately. However, a double-king bed is unusual and to sew the fabric together to simply make a double-king meant a seam would run through the middle of the bed. Ask any royal and they'll tell you: one should never sleep on a seam. The result: A custom-created silk comforter, seams appropriately placed on the edges, fit for a King (or two) and now slept in by guests at the villa.

The other guest rooms are quintessential Versace with the Barton G. touch. Golds, blues, reds and greens serve as the backdrop to patterns and prints you'd likely see in Roman churches and temples. Each room has a butler devoted to the guests, each butler expertly trained. Frescos line the hallways providing a history and art lesson to those who pass through. The interior frescoes were created by Versace's artisans and were restored by Barton G. The exteriors feature art that dates back to 1930 and the Versace era, and throughout the mansion you'll spot mythological figures that were brought in exclusively for the mansion when Versace lived here.

While I wasn't given the official confirmation, there are specific rooms in the villa that were designed with specific guests in mind. I opened the door to one room and found shades of red and gold plastered throughout the walls and on the furniture. A cherry wood desk sat at the far corner of the room and placed perfectly on the window seat was the most recent issue of Vogue. The room was said to be Madonna's personal suite when she stayed with Versace, and is currently the only room in North America with a gold-plated sunken bathtub (a perfect fit for the Material Girl, herself).

As if the mansion couldn't get extravagant, the scene was from the top of the villa. On the rooftop were lounge chairs, cabanas and sofas in shades of blue and corals offering exclusive views of South Beach, but kept completely private from passersby on the street. It was on the roof that Versace undoubtedly spent a few nights watching the sun set and entertaining guests, and today is serves as the ultimate retreat for guests wanting a little privacy under the South Miami sun.

Few people inspired fashion the way Gianni Versace did. Few people did it in a way that is as recognizable as Gianni Versace. Few people lived the way Gianni Versace lived, and today, few people get the opportunity to step inside the villa that was once owned by the iconic fashion designer. The Versace Miami Beach house today stands as a tribute to the man who helped define luxury to its core.

Last Saturday, Phil Materio, owner of McMow Art Glass and resident specialist in fusing techniques offered a special class to students and artists of the glass arts who choose fusing as their medium of expression. Specialty glass has different co-efficients of expansion and knowing how much and how long to fire the piece is critical to the process of fusing. More than 25 fusing artists came to learn the intricacies and subtleties of this fascinating process. Come by the McMow studio galleries for an up close look at some of these marvelous pieces.

Memorial Day

To honor all those we remember with gratitude and affection, the Dreamweavers at McMow will spend the day with family and friends in celebration of the life and liberty we hold so dear. The McMow studio/gallery will be closed on Monday, May 31st and reopen Tuesday, June 1st.

If we had lived a century ago, we would be celebrating Decoration Day today, instead of Memorial Day. While the patriotic sentiment of honoring the fallen remains the same, the holiday, originally celebrated to honor Union troops who perished in the Civil War, has changed in scope; we now honor all war dead on Memorial Day. As seen in this c. 1907 embossed patriotic postcard, the term “Decoration Day” is used to describe the holiday.

Great care has been taken in detailing the post card, which shows an elderly veteran with a cane saluting his fallen comrades, with a large wreath of forget-me-nots placed in the foreground and the whole enveloped in a patriotic red, white and blue surround.

The holiday fittingly began as a black history celebration, with the first impromptu Decoration Day observed in 1865 by liberated slaves in Charleston, SC, at Washington Race Course (now Hampton Park). The race course had been both a Confederate prison camp and a mass grave for Union soldiers who died in captivity. In a process which took only 10 days, freed slaves exhumed bodies from the mass grave, reinterring each Union solder in an individual grave. When finished, the former slaves built a fence around the graveyard, added an entry arch, and declared the site a Union cemetery. On May 1, 1865, a crowd of up to 10,000 mainly black residents, including 2,800 children, went to the graveyard and celebrated with a picnic, sermons and singing. And thus Decoration Day was born. However, Waterloo, NY gets the credit as the official birthplace of Memorial Day, because the village first formally observed the holiday on 5 May 1866.

Major General John A. Logan, a Murphysboro, Illinois native, helped popularize Decoration Day. On May 5, 1868, while commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic (a veterans’ organization), he issued a proclamation calling for nationwide observance of Decoration Day; it took place on 30 May, a date chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any battle. Noted postcard publishers such as Raphael Tuck created Decoration Day postcards, while postcard artists such as Ellen Clapsaddle created dramatic patriotic compositions. The London-based Tuck publishing company also created a series of much scarcer Confederate Memorial Day postcards; the South, unwilling for years to participate in a holiday honoring Union dead, didn’t adopt Memorial Day celebrations for the most part until after World War I, as Memorial Day began to take on a larger meaning commemorating all war dead. The alternative Memorial Day name, first used in 1882, didn’t become more common until after World War II. It wasn’t until 1967 that it was declared the holiday’s official name by Federal law. McMow Road Trip ~ "The Quest of Beauty"

Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), the American master of the glass arts as well as prolific painter, architect, decorator, designer and founder of the Tiffany Studios, celebrated his 68th birthday in 1916 with a retrospective exhibition of his work which he called, “A Quest of Beauty.” The Morse Museum, in Winter Park, Florida has three permanent galleries devoted to the selected works of Tiffany as well as a special installation, “Paintings by Louis Comfort Tiffany and His Circle.”

Shanon and Phil Materio, of McMow Art Glass invite you to join with other art glass lovers and artists for a special one day journey to Winter Park Florida to view all the collections. We will be traveling comfortably in a Midnight Sun Coach, leaving Lake Worth at 9:30 am. Upon our arrival in Winter Park, guests will have the opportunity to relax a bit before the guided museum tour begins at 2pm. Following the guided portion of the tour, which lasts one hour, guests are free to explore more of museum on their own, view ongoing films and presentations on Tiffany or spend some time in charming and lively downtown Winter Park. We will leave Winter Park at 5pm and arrive back in Lake Worth at 8pm.

We have room on the coach for 49 people and reservations will be going fast. The $45 price per person includes motor coach transportation and the museum entry fee. Complimentary snacks and beverages will be provided on the bus.

To reserve a place on the “Quest for Beauty” bus and trip to Winter Park, tickets must be purchased and paid in full at the time of reservation. From this picture of St. Teresa, the "Little Flower", the Dreamweavers at McMow Art Glass draw inspiration to create a "rose window" centerpiece.
Following client approval, a full size sketch is drawn and stained glass is selected.
A full size pattern is prepared for the next step - glass cutting.
After all the pieces are cut, they are relaid to insure accuracy before the painting and assembly are begun.
This shows a close-up of the pieces to be painted.

At this point, a decision was made to change the color of the glass in the border from red and dark blue to . . .
. . . to gold and red.
The pieces have all been camed in lead and is now ready for cementing.
When the piece is fully completed, the last step is always a close inspection before delivery to our client.

When the Sarasota Yacht Club decided it was time for a new building, they turned to Interior Designer, Susan Barton, from the firm of Peacock and Lewis to capture the essence of the Members love of the sea in the furnishings and decor. This magnificent window serves not only to bring an artful expression of the sea to the interiors, but also helps to bridge the space between a hallway and a conference room with light.

Fleur de Lis

Nice house, but something seems to be missing. This is a job for the Dreamweavers at McMow.
To the artistic eye, inspiration can be found anywhere - even in this wrought iron porch lamp, original to the house which was built in 1925.

From an idea to a sketch, the process begins.

The bouganvilla in front is usually covered year round in deep pink/red flowers. They will return in abundance after this recent cold snap passes through. From these lovely blooms, comes the idea for the cranberry glass feature of the classic Fleur de Lis design.

After several variations on the theme are explored, a design is selected and a full size pattern for each window is drawn.

After the perfect art glass is selected for each section, all the pieces are cut by hand.

Corded glass in the border with cranberry glass and the facetted bevels combine to make a subtle and classic beauty.

Notice how the outer petals of the Fleur de Lis cut into the cranberry border adding depth and interest to the overall piece.
Each cut piece is numbered to correspond with the full size pattern and awaits assembly.
True to Nature itself, beveled glass is seldom symetrical and expert fitting is required to achieve the desired result.
Cut pieces set in lead came.

For right handed Dreamweavers, like Maria, it's customary to start at the lower left corner and fit each piece into the other from there.
After the pieces are leaded and soldered, a super secret formula cement is applied to insure stability for the life of the window.
Maria performs the final steps in this creative process, carefully removing the excess and polishing the finished piece to a gleaming sparkle. Every detail of every window undergoes the closest scrutiny in the light before leaving the production workroom.
Before installation. The window is fastened on the inside of the glass and carefully set in place with wood moulding to perfectly match the original windows of the house.
Notice the bouganvilla on the exterior reflected in the bevels. Beautiful!

A tall narrow window tucked into the side of the porch awaits installation.

From the interior, this simple beauty adds such charm. Seen from the outside after dark.

Lastly, the transom windows that frame the front porch and are most visible from the street are ready to receive the McMow magic. Curtains are taken down and the transoms carefully placed in such a way that the windows will still fully open.

And yet, to all appearances, the transoms look as if they have always been at home right here. That's excellence in design and craftsmanship.

The sheers have been rehung and this window is now finished and beautifully dressed.

Art in State Buildings project awarded to the Dreamweavers at McMow

Local Lake Worth Artists Awarded Arts in State Buildings Project Lake Worth, Fl –

Today, two local Lake Worth artists were awarded the Art in State Buildings Program, Lake Wales Clinic project. Shanon Materio, President and Tricia Besley, Project Manager of McMow Art Glass Inc. were awarded the project based on their stained glass designs. The windows will be installed June 2010, at the Florida Department of Health's Lake Wales Clinic in Polk County, Fl.

The one of a kind stained glass windows were designed to “bring life” to the clinic’s traditional atmosphere. Utilizing rich hand-painted and kiln-fired glass, the windows will incorporate bright colors and unique textures into two lobby areas within the clinic. Ms. Materio and Ms. Besley researched local flora and fauna as inspiration for their proposal. Flowers growing at the historic Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, Fl became one highlight of their winning vision. Stylized versions of these flowers, as well as, a “canopy-like” tree concept will transform the clinic into a warm and inviting place for all who visit.

The Art in State Buildings Program serves as a way for Florida residents to experience artwork on a more personal level. State artists gain the opportunity to have their work become part of the State’s public art collection. Ms. Materio and Ms. Besley look forward to connecting with residents and clinic patients through their distinctive design.

St. John the Evangelist Chancel Windows

From first sketch through installation, follow along as the Dreamweavers from McMow Art Glass create The Holy Spirit Chancel windows for St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in West Boca Raton. Church leaders requested an uplifting image to evoke the presence of God as Life. The Church is under construction and is expected to be completed this Summer.

Filigree Lantern Restoration

Repairing important and valuable pieces of art glass is a specialty at McMow. This amazing filigree and stained glass latern recently came to the Dreamweavers for repair and restoration. Several glass panels had been cracked or broken and the filigree itself was damaged in a few critical places.

What an opportunity to see this incredibly well crafted piece from the inside.

Street Painting Festival

$605 Raised for Lake Worth Haiti Relief Effort - UPDATE

John and Bobbie Stidham from Boynton Beach are presented with the beautiful stained glass window they won in the Haiti Relief Raffle. Mayor Varela accepted the check for $605 from McMow owner, Phil Materio. Congratulations to Bobbie Stidham and special thanks to Maryanne Webber Galleries, Cyber Business Center and the Lake Worth District 14 PBSO for their help in making this community effort a great success.

At 1pm this afternnon, the lucky ticket was drawn for the beautiful stained glass window donated by McMow Art Glass. Bobbie Stidhem from Boynton Beach Florida was the name drawn from all the tickets entered. Seventy-six persons bought 121 chances at $5 each for a grand total of $605.00, all for the Earthquake Relief Effort. Arrangements are being finalized to make the donation to Mayor Varela for the City of Lake Worth Haiti Relief Fund and to present the window to our lucky winner, Bobbie Stidhem. Thank You to everyone who participated and helped to make this such a success.

The New England Club

The New England Club from Palm Beach Leisureville of Boynton Beach came Friday morning for a tour of the McMow Studios. Shanon Materio, (far left in the photo) who co-owns McMow with her husband Phil, conducted the tour through the art studio, the retail Shop, the gallery of gifts, the workrooms and class space and the production rooms.

Announcing the formation of the McMow Art Glass Society, dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the glass arts through support for glass artists, ongoing education and training in the glass mediums, developing support and patronage for the glass arts and providing a network for artists, patrons, vendors and suppliers to exchange ideas and opportunites.

The Society welcomes everyone interested in the glass arts, amateurs and professionals, students and instructors, suppliers and vendors as well as those who wish to learn more about the ancient and lively glass arts. We will be offering Demonstrations, Guest Speakers, Show and Tells, Contests and Special Events.

Making the McMow Art Glass studios available to independent Dreamweavers is another way the Dreamweavers at McMow support and encourage local glass artists. For a nominal fee, artists can come and work on independent projects utilizing the well equipped McMow studios. The McMow professionals are always on hand with admiration and advice. Beginners Class of Dreamweavers

We are privileged to follow the newest Beginners Class of Dreamweavers from beginning to end. Over the course of five weeks, each of these new Dreamweavers learn the secrets of transforming light and color in the art of stained glass. Special Thanks to Dreamweaver Instructor Natalie Goff and to Dreamweavers Michel, Ann Marie, Rich, Carolyn, Denise, Norma and Leah for allowing us to accompany them on the amazing journey they have begun.

In Week Four,The Beginners Class of Dreamweavers has moved their projects onto the big light tables at McMow. Here they will complete all the foiling and soldering. Next week we will get to see each and every one of these finished and beautiful pieces.
Week Four

Now in Week Three of the Beginners Class, the Dreamweavers advance their individual projects. Most of the cutting and grinding has been completed and some have begun the foiling application. Next week, soldering.
Week Three

The latest Beginners Class at McMow began on Saturday, January 9th. In that class, all the Dreamweavers created their own Butterfly and in the process learned the fundamental techniques of cutting, grinding, foiling, assembling and soldering stained glass. Each is now ready in Week Two to pursue more advanced expression that will allow their new skills to be refined and perfected in a project of their own choosing.

A new shipment of art glass has arrived at McMow from Art Glass makers across the USA with names as colorful as their beautiful glass; Spectrum, Wissmach, Youghagany, Kokomo, Pilkington, Uroboros and Bullseye

The crates are carefully opened and the different glass is sorted and placed in storage.

Some of the glass received will find a place in McMow commissions and some will be used by the many glass artists in our area who depend on McMow for their materials.

Dreamweaver Barbara Wolfe

Meet Dreamweaver Barbara Wolfe, an artist who found and follows her own dream of bringing light to life through the art glass medium. Barbara is a Dreamweaver who began to develop her skill in Art Glass five years ago in a Beginners Art Class at McMow. For the last year, she has been working in her spare time to build a stained glass lamp from the famous Tiffany "Peony" pattern.

The Peony pattern was created originally by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The pattern below represents one third of the lamp. Notice the dark blue areas. Those represent the spaces that will come together to form the "turban shape" for the finished shade, much like flattening out a globe to see a flat map. Each of the three repeats requires 274 individual cut pieces for a total of 822 precision cuts.

Applying color to the pattern allows Barbara to determine how the colors she has chosen will work together in the overall design.

Primary colors of rich blue, yellow and crimson are framed with vibrant tones of green. The softer pink and lavender tones add just the right balance and sophistication to the pallette. Here are all the pieces for this section cut and fit together on the pattern.

The next step is to take each of the cut pieces and form the "turban" shape. The pattern has been transferred to the mold and the pieces will be applied with "tacky wax" to hold the pieces in shape. This is a necessary step to transform 822 individual pieces of flat glass into one beautiful and complex contoured shape.

All the cut pieces have been assembled on the Peony mold. The next step is to take each piece, one by one, off the mold and apply copper foil to the edges.

After foiling, each piece is re-tacked to the mold. At this point, any of the flat edges that don't perfectly meet the adjoining glass are adjusted with wax filler to make the surface completely smooth before the solder is applied.

Barbara shows us here where this tiny piece was raised with a bit of wax to make it meet up precisely with the larger pieces around it. This is a critical process especially at points like this where the outer curve of the top of the lamp curves inward to meet the bottom band.

All the pieces have been foiled and re-tacked and are now ready for soldering.

This photo best illustrates why it's necessary to "tacky-wax" the pieces on the form and why the form is fixed to a tilt table.

Soldering is the process whereby solid lead is liqufied with heat and applied to the edges of the glass that have been foiled. The foil accepts the molten lead to seal the edges together on the top and in between the pieces.

As each portion is completed, Barbara shifts the mold on the tilt table so she can work on the most horizontal surface a little at a time. The bottom three rows that form the border will not be soldered to the upper lamp at this time because with the inner curve of the bottom border, it would be impossible to remove the shade from the turban shaped mold.

Here the lower edge has been removed and set aside.

This is the outside of the lower portion after it was removed. Notice the unsoldered edge around the perimeter.

The inside of the lower edge will be soldered next and reattached to the upper portion later on.

The "tacky-wax" holding the upper lamp to the mold is softened with heat to loosen the lamp from the mold.

Phil Materio and Tricia Beasley from McMow lend a hand with this delicate process.

A piece this large and complex requires heat to be applied inside the mold as well as outside so the mold will slip out easily and not damage the glass that has only been soldered on the outside.

Ahhhh! Success!

Phil holds the unfinished lamp up to the light to give a hint of how wonderful the final shade will be. The entire interior of the lamp still has to be soldered and bottom rows attached.

Barbara has joined the top and bottom sections and soldered them together on the outside. Now it's time to solder the interior.

Like all great Dreamweavers, Barbara patiently applies the same precision and careful attention to detail when she solders the interior of the lamp.

This beautiful lamp will be hung as a chandelier in Barbara's home when she returns later this Spring. To give us a picture of how lovely this finished lamp will look above her dining room table, Barbara installed the piece on a lamp base. It's just beautiful.
